Cougars Fall in Double OT Heartbreaker

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In what proved to be a highly contested MWLC match up, the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team battled neck and neck against Augsburg University, before ultimately falling 13-12, in double overtime.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Five different Cougars appeared in the scoring column today, with Anna Kellar scoring the game-high five goals.
  • As Sydney Fuller continues to run CUC's offense, the senior had five points off three assists and two goals.
  • Senior Margaret Doane had herself a four-point day, recording a pair of goals and assists.
Taking on the #2 team in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference did not seem to phase the Cougars, as Concordia-Chicago opened up the day with two consecutive goals from Fuller and Emily Cyrwus Midway through the first half, CUC doubled its lead as Doane dumped in a high pass past Augsburg's keeper, and Cyrwus deked a defender three times to rifle a shot in. With a 5-2 lead, the CUC defense settled in as the Auggies scored three straight goals to tie up the game. As three minutes remained in the half, Kellar and an Augsburg attacker each exchanged goals, pushing the tight match into another 6-6 tie, going into the second half. Opening up the final frame of regulation, Sydney LaTurner earned a free position shot that she was able to convert into a goal and give CUC another one-goal lead. From there, the Cougars tacked on two more goals to establish a comfortable 9-6 advantage. However, the Auggies refused to let up, as they once again tallied two straight goals and pull within just one of CUC.

With just under 20 to go, Fuller ran a play from the top of the 12 and found Kellar in front of the crease, who dumped in a low shot for Concordia's 10th goal of the day. Down 10-8, Augsburg scored two back-to-back goals to tie things up and went back and forth with the Cougars in scoring for the final 15 minutes of regulation play.

Forcing the game into overtime, the Cougar defense worked hard to stop the Auggies' momentum. After one three-minute period, the two teams headed into double overtime, where Augsburg earned a breakaway and managed to complete the sudden death goal.

Concordia-Chicago has a quick turnaround as the Cougars return to action tomorrow afternoon against top-seeded Hamline. Game time is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
