MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- After falling in an early six-goal hole, Concordia-Chicago bounced back in the second half, scoring 10 unanswered goals to defeat Cornell College 14-10.
With tonight's victory, CUC improves to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in MWLC play.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Cougars produced their first shut out half of the season, blanking the Rams in the second half while allowing just three shots in the final 30 minutes of play.
- Anna Kellar was stellar on offense, finishing with six goals and two assists. Her eight points tonight marks the fourth time this season that the Illinois native has tallied eight points or more in a single game.
- Sydney Fuller showed up when it mattered most, finishing the night with two goals and one assist including the ultimate game-winning goal.
- As a team, CUC caused 12 turnovers.
Through the first quarter of the game, things remained even keeled. As the Rams and Cougars traded goals back and forth,
Emily Cyrwus netted her first of three goals on the day, bringing the score to just 4-3.
After that, Cornell tacked on three goals and pulled ahead to a 7-3 lead. Kellar managed to sneak one goal in before the half ended, but the Rams' offense was rolling as they cruised to a 10-4 advantage heading into the halftime break.
CUC's offensive exploded in the second half, while the team's defense buckled down to storm past the Rams. Senior
Margaret Doane started the Cougar-streak with a goal right at the 27:50 mark. Less than a minute later, Kellar kicked off her three-goal tear and pulled CUC within just two goals of Cornell and over 20 minutes left to play to stage a comeback. From there, Doane and Kellar each tallied one more goal and finally tied up the game.
Shortly after Kellar's equalizer, Fuller had her shining moment as she charged from the far side of 15-yard line across the field, through defenders to score the game-winning goal. With the lead in hand, the Cougars would tack on three more goals to solidfy an outstanding 14-10 come from behind victory over MWLC opponent, Cornell College.
CUC returns to action this weekend with a double-header against Hamline and Augsburg inside Concordia Stadium.
