Cougars Win Big in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Returning to action after a tough loss last Saturday, the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team bounced back to win its third MWLC conference game, 14-6 over Northwestern University (MN).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Graduate student Anna Kellar scored seven goals and one assist, leading the Cougar offense. Today's game marks her fourth straight game scoring five points or more.
  • Netminder Alexis Gandhi saw 22 shots today, tallying six saves along the way to her fourth career win.
  • Sydney Fuller finished the day with five assists, good for the second time this season that the senior has dished five or more assists in a single game.
  • Scoring today's 14th goal of the game, senior Jazmin Betancourt recorded her first career goal.
Northwestern's Eagles stalled the Cougars in the opening minutes of play, as the MWLC foe took an early 2-0 lead during the first few minutes of the game.

Less than a minute later, Kellar scored on a free position shot to cut the Cougars' deficit in half. Kellar's goal marked the fifth consecutive game in which the graduate student has scored CUC's first goal of the day. Up 2-1, the Eagles scored again but held the two-goal lead for just a few minutes as Margaret Doane whirled around defenders to make it a 3-2 game at the 18:30 mark. Forging an early come back, the Cougars continued to work. With 10 minutes left in the half, Fuller made a clean pass to Kellar, who was able to score yet another goal and tie up the game.

Kellar and Doane would each score once more, to close out an unanswered three-goal CUC tear. With a 5-3 lead, Northwestern earned two consecutive free position shots and put each one in the back of the net to tie up the game once again, with just one minute to go in the half.

With nearly 50 seconds left to play in the half, Kellar cut through several Eagle defenders and met Fuller's pass to dump the ball past Northwestern's keeper and take a 6-5 lead heading into the break. Opening up the second half, Kellar scored twice more in seven minutes of work to give her squad the distant 8-5 lead. Fuller would also net her first goal of the game, and fifth point, before the game went into a nearly nine-minute long scoring drought.

After a CUC timeout and successful clear, the Cougars drove to the net and scored their 10th of the game from Emily Cyrwus. From there, CUC out scored Northwestern 4-1 to preserve its 14-6 victory.

The Cougars will return to play this Saturday in Mequon, as Concordia-Chicago will face its MWLC rival Concordia Wisconsin.
