CUC Comes Up Short, Falls 10-9 to Bucs

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In their second home game of the season, Concordia University Chicago took on Beloit College. The Cougars started out strong and took an early 5-3 lead, but the Bucs outscored CUC 7-4 in the final half of play to win it 10-9.

Beloit was able to strike first with just over 28 minutes left in the first half. With just over 25 to go, graduate student Anna Kellar found the back of the net and tied up the game at 1-1.

A few minutes later, Margaret Doane got going on offensive to give CUC its first lead of the day, 2-1. Able to strike back quickly within the 30 seconds after a Beloit goal, CUC forced a defensive turnover from Beloit and added another goal from Kellar in the 14th minute to push the score to 4-2 in favor of the Cougars.  With just three minutes left in the half, Sydney LaTurner put the Cougars up by three after finding the net to make the score 5-2.

Down 5-3, the Bucs turned up the pressure in the second half, as Beloit scored back-to-back goals to tie up the game with 20 minutes to go in regulation.

For her third goal of the game, Kellar found the back of the net once again in the 18th minute to give CUC back the lead with a score of 6-5.

Beloit continuously earned free position attempts in the second half, but several point-blank saves from keeper Alexis Gandhi helped CUC keep the game at bay.On a Beloit penalty shot, goalie Alexis Ghandi made a nice save to keep it a tie game.

With seven minutes to go, LaTurner assisted Kellar for her fifth of the afternoon to give the Cougars breathing room with a 9-7 lead.

From there, Beloit went on a 3-0 scoring run to take hold of the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. The Cougars were unable to net another goal in the final minute of play, leaving the final score 10-9 in favor of Beloit.

Gandhi finished with 11 saves and Kellar had another monstrous day with five goals and one assist.

CUC returns to the field on Tuesday, March 19 at University of Northwestern (MN).
