DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team improved to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in MWLC play with a 13-8 victory over Loras College this afternoon.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Goalie Alexis Gandhi finished 13 saves, including several point blank stops off free position shots, to pick up her third career win.
- Anna Kellar tied her own records in most points and goals scored in a game, finishing with seven goals and nine points.
Kellar started off the scoring for the Cougars and led the way throughout the entire game, as the graduate student tallied CUC's first goal of the day off an unassisted rifle past Loras' keeper.
Less than four minutes later, Kellar caused a Duhawks turnover and passed off the consequential groundball to
Emily Cyrwus, who was able to convert the pass into a goal.
With a 2-0 lead, Loras finally began to gain some momentum as the Duhawks slipped on past CUC and cut their deficit in half.
At the 17:32 mark, the Cougars drew up a play and caused havoc in Loras' defensive zone. As CUC spread across the field, senior
Margaret Doane drove through the lane to score and make it a 3-1 game.
A little while later, Kellar once again found herself in scoring position when she earned a free position attempt. The Illinois native converted the attempt into a made shot and increased CUC's lead to three goals.
Over the final 12 minutes of the half, Kellar would score two more goals as well as dish an assist on a
Sydney Fuller goal to push the game to 7-4 heading into the halftime break.
Doane opened up the second half with a free position shot and once again extended the Cougar lead. Later on, Kellar would notch another goal, this time off a Fuller assist, followed by Cyrwus driving towards the crease to score off a pass from behind the net to command a 10-4 lead.
Over the remaining 27 minutes of regulation, CUC would score three more goals. Loras would add five more goals of their own too, but the efforts were not enough to stop Concordia-Chicago's earlier surge.
The Cougars return to action tomorrow afternoon to take on Beloit College at 3 p.m. inside Concordia Stadium.
