Cougars Drop Five Set Battle With North Park

CHICAGO, Ill. – In a season of firsts for the Concordia University Chicago Men's Volleyball team, the Cougars headed east to North Park University to play Vikings for the second time this season, the first time CUC has ever played an opponent a second time. The Cougars and Vikings played an intense five set match earlier this season and tonight was no different. The Vikings took the opening two sets before CUC stormed back to take the next two. Unfortunately for CUC the Vikings would get things going in set five to spoil the rematch 3-2.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Matthew Geiser led with 19 kills and four aces on the night.
  • Brian Perez had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.
  • Trent Weber dished a season high 57 assists.
  • CUC out hit North Park .245 to .197.

In the first, CUC found themselves trailing until a Ryan Felbinger ace along with kills by Skylar Versendaal and Anthony Galindo helped power a 4-0 run to give CUC a 8-7 lead. The Cougars were able to expand their lead to 15-13 on a Geiser kill. CUC was unable to hold onto the lead however, as North Park closed on a 6-2 run to take set one 25-23.

In set two CUC used a 5-1 run to grab an early lead. Three kills by Geiser helped to power the run. North Park answered though, building their lead out to five midway through the set to take set two 25-22.

With their backs against the wall CUC got going in set three. The Cougars used a 7-2 run early in the set which was capped by a Perez kill. CUC continued to get the offense going, closing set three on a 9-3 run to take set three 25-19.

Set four saw CUC come out strong again. With Geiser serving, CUC ripped off a 4-0 run to open the set. The Cougars expanded their lead with another 4-0 run which saw Galindo, Virgilio Rodriguez and Geiser get going offensively. CUC built their lead out to as many as seven in the set, as they forced a disisive game five with a 25-18 set four win.

CUC got off to a fast start in set five with a 4-0 run. Perez capped it with a kill from Weber. North Park battled back to tie the set at nine. Unfortunately for CUC the Vikings were able to rip off an 8-2 run to run away with set five 15-11.

The Cougars will return to action on Friday night when they take on NACC opponent MSOE. The Raiders are currently receiving votes in the AVCA poll.
