Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Looking to open up the 2019 season on a high note, the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team battled Concordia Ann Arbor on the road, before routing the Cardinals 12-11 thanks to a last minute goal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- In her first collegiate game Emily Cyrwus looked calm and comfortable. Cyrwus found the net three times and did not shy away in the closing moments of the game. Her clutch last second goal propelled the Cougars to their first win of the new season.
- Sydney Fuller continued her facilitator role that she filled last season with five assists and chipping in one goal for herself.
- Other goal scorers included; Margaret Doane (3), Sydney Laturner (2), Anna Kellar (2), and finally Sandra Acevado (1).
- In her first career game between the pipes, Alexis Gandhi picked up the win and stopped 11 shots.Â
Concordia-Chicago came out strong to open up the season. Four minutes into the match Doane swiftly cut through the CUAA defense for the Cougars' first goal of the season. In  the final seven minutes of play in the first half the CUC offense finally gained some momentum behind Cyrwus and Doane, widening their lead to 6-4 after two consecutive goals.
In the early moments of the second half, Cyrwus and Doane added two more goals to extend their lead to 8-4 with 24 minutes to play. Continuing the attack, Doane and Fuller fired in two more scores and put Concordia-Chicago up 10-5 with 17 minutes remaining.
From there, the Cougars' lead would slip slowly out of their hands. CUC's defense battled, but the CUAA offense found a way to tie the score at 10 a piece with seven minutes left in the game. Laturner broke the tie a minute later and the Cougars looked to have control of the outcome. With 47 seconds left, the Cardinals tied the score once again. As time was ticking under 30 seconds the Cougars' offense had one last attack. They would capitalize off an acrobatic goal by Cyrwus that broke the final tie of the game and made the score 12-11.
Looking to build off of these late game heroics, the women will hit the road on Tuesday, Feb. 26, to battle against the University of Chicago. Game time starts at 5:00 p.m.
