RIVER FOREST, Ill.— After picking up 11 point win over Rockford to open the 2019-20 season, the Cougars hit the road for a two game weekend at the UW-Whitewater Tip-off Classic beginning Friday afternoon against the host Warhawks. CUC then concludes the weekend on Saturday against UW-Stevens Point.
Series History: The Cougars and Warhawks have met just one time since the 2001 season. UWW took that neutral site contest held at Lakeland University by a score of 84-52. CUC has no recent history against their second opponent of the weekend, UW-Stevens Point.
So Fresh So Good: In the season opening win against Rockford, CUC freshmen accounted for 44 of the teams 69 points. Two freshmen,
Bailey Steinkamp and
Tara Hastings led the scoring for CUC, while
Madelyn McGrath led the way with seven steals, which is the most for a freshman in a debut. In total, eight freshman played in the opening game for the Cougars.
Big Debut: As mentioned before Hastings had a big opener for the Cougars, finishing with 17 points and six steals. She fell just three points shy of
Sam Bloom's record of 20 points for most points in a collegiate debut. She finished 7-16 from the floor and played a team high 32 minutes. She also finished with three assists.
Record Longball: CUC racked up 14 made threes in the win over Rockford. That was the highest amount made in a game since 2017 at LaVerne. The 46.7 percent shooting from range is also a best under coach Martin.
