Muskies Rout Cougars in Final Home Contest

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Concordia University Chicago took on Lakeland University this afternoon in the last regular season home matchup of the season. CUC was following an emotional and hard fought Senior Night win the night before, and looked to close out their season on a positive note. The Muskies made that hard for Concordia-Chicago however, as the Muskies would sweep the Cougars in three straight sets.

Inside the Box Score:
·      Kelly Gootee opened up the day strong, starting off set one with 10 assists. She ended the day with 26 assists and nine digs, just one shy of a double-double.
·      Shannon Stamp led the offense with a .438 attack percentage off eight kills and 16 attempts. The junior had just one error.
·      Libero Julia Beers had a team-high 11 digs.

Concordia-Chicago opened up with a quick 3-1 lead after a Jaylynn Johnson kill in the first set. Aggressive offense forced the Muskies to make mistakes and the Cougars stayed tight in the opening stages. Despite trailing by a few points at a time, CUC took the lead midway through set one after an Alexa Lomantini ace, to make it 15-14. This would be the last lead for Concordia-Chicago in set one though, as Lakeland would take it by a score of 25-19.

Set two started off in the Muskies' control. A Johnson kill preceded a Beers ace and soon the Cougars were back in it. Alyssa Henline gave CUC their first lead of the set, 6-5, with a kill to the back row. Similar to the previous set, Lakeland would take back control and hold a steady lead. Stamp tried to lessen the Muskie lead with a kill that made it 16-13, but Lakeland did not budge throughout the rest of the set. They would go on to take set two 25-17.

CUC started the third set with their backs against the wall, being down 2-0. Concordia-Chicago was dug into a deep 8-3 hole, forcing them to take their first timeout of the set. Struggling to gain momentum out of the break though, the Cougars soon fell victim to a 10-1 run by the Muskies and found themselves trailing 18-4 in the third. The deficit proved to be too large to overcome too, as Lakeland walked away with the 25-11 third set win and match victory.

The Cougars will return to the court to close out the regular season next weekend at the WLC Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis..
