Cougars Win Out in Day One

Milwaukee, WI- Concordia University Chicago (13-17; 5-7 NACC) traveled up north to play a weekend full of games. In the first day they took on Beloit College (8-17; 0-9) and Maranatha Baptist University (17-4). The day started off strong after CUC dominated Beloit College in a clean sweep (25-11, 25-13, 25-19). The Cougars would keep the same energy in the next match, and sweep Maranatha Baptist in three (25-23, 25-18, 25-21).

Inside the Box Score:
  • CUC led dominated offensively. Registering 84 kills, while only allowing 57.
  • Offense efficiency did not stop there. Concordia-Chicago had 17 aces, opposed to the other teams combining for three.
  • Defense was also a strong suit. The Cougars ended the night by recording 11 blocks.

Concordia-Chicago took on Beloit in the first match of the day. During the sweep, CUC was led by a strong effort from the trio of Jaylynn Johnson(11 kills), Julia Spitelli (9), and Shannon Stamp (8) up front. Julia Beers put in another strong game serving with five aces, followed by Alyssa Henline (3). A great all-around effort was capped off by Kelly Gootee. Gootee ended the match with 30 assists. After finishing out the third set of not allowing Beloit into the 20's, they would look to keep some momentum against a strong Maranatha team.

Up next for CUC was Maranatha Baptist. The Sabercats gave the Cougars a little more resistance, but it was to no avail. Spitelli would have another great game up front for the CUC attack with 14 kills, and Stamp did not allow Maranatha get into a groove by adding five blocks on the defensive end. Alexa Lomantini paced the squad in digs with 17, followed by Beers (16), and Henline (13). After sneaking out of the final set, Concordia-Chicago would finish the day 2-0 with six straight set wins.

Concordia-Chicago will travel back to Milwaukee to face off against University of Wisconsin-Superior and Wisconsin Lutheran College. The first game time is set for 12:00 p.m. and the second is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in the final game of the season.
