MADISON, Wis. -- Needing to pick up points on the road this afternoon, the Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team did just that in a stalemate that fell CUC's way, 1-0.
The Cougars jumped out the gates this afternoon, and attacked the Eagles' defense almost immediately. CUC flooded Edgewood's defensive zone with four shots in the first 15 minutes of play, and forced the Eagles' keeper to stop two early shots on goal. While the Cougars couldn't find the back of the net in the first half, they managed to out shoot the Eagles 8-2 through the first frame.Â
After halftime, CUC again opened up with two quick shots. In the 56th minute of play, the Cougars earned a corner kick and hoped to execute on the play. After the service from
Brianna Welch, a scrum ensued in front of Edgewood's goal and eventually, senior
Samantha Wozniak was awarded a penalty kick. With a boot into the top right corner of the net, Wozniak beat Edgewood's netminder and gave CUC a much-needed 1-0 advantage.Â
In the 66th minute, Concordia threatened to strike again as
Samantha Goodlett and Wozniak combined for three shots on goal in a two-minute span. To no avail, CUC held onto their 1-0 lead despiteÂ
Edgewood's best efforts.
After picking up the win, CUC improves to 6-4-1 in conference play, and will look to earn critical points on the road Wednesday at MSOE. The Cougars currently sit in sixth place among the NACC standings, with the top five playoff spots already clinched by conference opponents.Â
