Diaz Strikes Twice as CUC Men Win Fifth Straight

On senior day, Concordia (7-6, 4-3 NACC) took on Wisconsin Lutheran College (6-6-1, 2-4-1 NACC) in their final weekend match of the regular season. Today, the Cougars celebrated starting goalie Jose Retana, who currently has a .803 save percentage in the net.

In just the eighth minute, the Cougars were able to strike early on a goal from Joel Diaz, with the assist from Gerardo Medina to make the score 1-0.

The game seemed to get more physical, with the teams becoming more aggressive on both sides of the ball. The Warriors would have a chance when, after a throw-in, there would be a lot of traffic in front of the goal, but Retana made the valiant efforts to keep the Cougars in control of the lead.

In the 23rd minute, a corner kick led to multiple shots on goal for the Cougars, and eventually resulted in the second goal of the game for Concordia. The WLC goalie and his defender made strong efforts, but it wasn't enough to stop Diaz for the second time, making the score 2-0.

Seven minutes later, following a Concordia foul, Wisconsin Lutheran cut the lead in half from a shot past midfield that bounced over Retana's reach, taking the score to 2-1 Bot CUC got that back before the half. After a deflected shot in front of the goal, Alberto Arellano fired a missile to make the score 3-1, which held up going into half time.

Within the first few minutes into the second half, Wisconsin Lutheran scored on a direct kick to bring them within one, 3-2. Again, it did not take long for CUC to answer, as Ian Gummo scored with the assist from Michael Bogart to go back to a two-goal lead at 4-2.

As the game went on, the number of yellow cards seemed to pile up and the players showed no signs of losing any aggressiveness. But the Cougars' defense would hold firm, and they would hold on to the 4-2 win and record their fifth straight victory.

Concordia's next match is set for Wednesday, October 23rd against Dominican University at the Stars' home field.
