Cardiac Cougars Win in Final Seconds

River Forest, Ill.- Concordia University Chicago (7-6; 4-3 NACC) faced off against Illinois Institute of Technology (5-8-1; 1-4-1 NACC). In the first half CUC would trail by a goal but make up the deficit before the beginning of halftime. Concordia-Chicago would be the first to score in the second half, and the last to score in the match. At the final buzzer the Cougars would go onto win 2-1.

Inside the Box Score:
  • First time beating IIT in program history.
  • Concordia-Chicago won its 7th game of the season, tying the program record.
  • IIT tallied four more shots, but could not catch up to CUC late.

In the opening half CUC's tough defense held the game scoreless for the first 25 minutes. IIT would find a way past the Cougar defense and record their first goal of the match. Before the end of the half Concordia-Chicago would answer. With three minutes remaining in the first half, Patrick Hopkins stepped up to take a free kick from fifty yards out. Defying all odds, Hopkins passed the ball all the way up to John Walsh, who tipped it in past the IIT goalie's hands. There would be no more scoring in the first half and going into regulation the score was 1-1.

Moving into the second half, both teams ramped back up their defensive efforts. This time CUC would be the first ones to score in the final half. In the 69th minute, the IIT goalie played a ball around the net aggressively and rushed Michael Bogart. Bogart outsmarted the steal attempt and pulled the ball out to create distance and score the second Cougar goal of the match. Scoring after that would be commenced and the final score would end at 2-1.

Concordia-Chicago will look ahead to Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday, October 19th. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
