Madison, WI- Concordia University Chicago (9-15; 3-5 NACC) traveled to Wisconsin to face off against Edgewood College (7-15; 1-7 NACC) in a critical inter-conference matchup. The Eagles would edge out CUC in the first two sets (21-25, 20-25), but the Cougars did not go down easily. Concordia-Chicago would send a message with a 25-12 set three win, but ultimately lose the match after falling 20-25 in set four.
Inside the Box Score:
- In an evenly played match, the most glaring stat was service errors committed by each team (CUC-14, EC-5).
- Concordia-Chicago's defense stepped up, tripling the Eagles in total blocks (9-3).
- Julia Spitelli did her part on the offensive end once again, leading the way with 13 kills.
Opening up the match there was back and forth scoring. Edgewood would start off with three unanswered points, but it would be negated by a 3-0 Cougar run to even it up. This mantra would continue up until the end of the set. CUC fought off seven service errors throughout the set to remain close but would lose 25-21
Another close scoring set followed the first one. The Cougars would lose some traction late and trail 23-16. Not ready to give up, CUC went on a 3-0 run to stay competitive.
Alyssa Henline would hammer in a kill, assisted by
Kelly Gootee. Following the kill,
Julia Beers would record two service aces and before the Eagles knew it the score was 23-19. Concordia-Chicago could not continue their momentum and would fall 25-21 in the second set.
In the third set it was do-or-die for the Cougars and they would play like it. A huge 12-2 run, sandwiched in the middle of the set, highlighted the dominant 25-12 set three win and kept the CUC pulse beating.
Set four was almost identical to sets one and two. Play would stay even until the Eagles broke open the score with a 9-1 run to end the set and crush the Cougars' hopes at a comeback. CUC would avoid the sweep but drop set four 25-20.
Concordia-Chicago will look to bounce back against Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday, October 19
th. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
