RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In an equally matched game, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars (0-4) and Alma College Scots (1-2) battled tooth-and-nail until a last minute goal allowed the Scots their first victory of the season.
The Cougars had several clean breaks from the Scots in the opening 45 minutes of play. However, Alma's defense seemed to shut down any potential breakaway or scoring opportunity that CUC presented. Neither team managed to score and at the end of the first half, the game remained a 0-0 stalemate.Â
Alma College had out shot the Cougars just 3-2 in the first half.Â
The Scots turned up the energy in the second half, taking 12 shots opposed to CUC's one. Alma's Lauren Sollestre was a steady force all day long, as she had six shots with four on goal. Evidently, Sollestre would be the one to win it for the Scots. With 45 seconds left in regulation and an overtime period looming in the balance, Sollestre earned a breakaway off a clean pass downfield from Isabella Wingate. From there, Sollestre was able to tap the ball in, give Alma the 1-0 lead, and crush the chances for a Cougar equalizer.
Concordia-Chicago will return to action this Wednesday, at Concordia Stadium, against Kalamazoo College. Game time is set to begin at 4 p.m.
