Cougars Avoid Moody Weather, Shoot Down Archers

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- One home opener was not enough for the Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team, after their game against Carleton College on Monday was called due to lightning. Since that game was null and void, the Cougars' 2018 home opener was to be played against fellow Chicago school, Moody Bible.

Moody Bible had not played a game yet this season, and were completely dominated by CUC throughout the game, with the Cougars snatching their first win of the season in 4-1 fashion.

CUC came out to the pitch with loads of energy and took control of possession for the majority of the first half. The Cougar offense kept the ball in the Archers' zone but did not come up with anything until the 27-minute mark in the first half. Moody Bible had appeared to clear the ball out of scoring range until freshman Jared Farnsworth headed the ball to a streaking Gerardo Medina for Concordia-Chicago's first goal of the 2018 season.

After ten minutes of action, the Archers found the back of the net to even up the score at 1-1. In the 30th minute, Peter Munro connected with Medina on the right wing for his second goal of the game which resulted in a 2-1 lead for CUC. Before the half ran out, the Cougars had to fend off an aggressive Archer attack to go into the break with a slim 2-1 lead.

One half away from their first victory of the season, Concordia-Chicago picked up where they left off and thoroughly controlled the pitch to open the final frame. Soon it was Moody Bible's chance to attack on the offensive end but the Cougars' gritty defense forced a couple of missed shots and allowed their offense to regain a firm grasp of possession. Near misses held Concordia-Chicago back from expanding their lead until freshman Ryan Kuhlman was tripped in the box and capitalized with a penalty kick giving CUC a 3-1 lead in the sixty-sixth minute. The goal was the first of Kuhlman's career.

Kuhlman was not finished scoring in the match. With less than 10 minutes to go, he dodged a defender to his right and sunk the shot from the left wing to solidify the Cougars' first win of the season. Concordia-Chicago wrapped up the game with a final score of 4-1 exhibiting tremendous defense and crafty offense.

The Cougars will be back in action Monday, Sept. 10 at Wheaton College. Game time is set for 7 p.m., under the lights, where CUC will look to build off of its first win of the season.
