Thunder Strikes, Shuts Out Cougars

WHEATON, Ill. -- In their final non-conference match up of the season, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars were shut out by the Wheaton College Thunder, 4-0.

Despite being outshot 14-1 in the first half, the Cougars hung onto the Thunder and continued to defend their own, as well as put pressure on the Wheaton defense. The Cougars held off Wheaton for 35 minutes of play, until Ryan Melgar dodged two CUC defenders and netted the ball. Melgar's goal helped lead Wheaton into the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.

Just six minutes into the second half the Thunder struck again. Wheaton's Shane Kopplin scored from the left wing to increase CUC's deficit to 2-0.

Over the remaining 30 minutes of play, Wheaton scored two more goals to run away with the 4-0 victory.

Wheaton outshot CUC 23-1 throughout the course of the game.

The Cougars will return to the drawing board and have over a week to prepare for their next match up. On Wednesday, Sept. 19 CUC will open up conference play at Benedictine University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
