FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- In what proved to be a busy afternoon, the Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team fell 3-2 to Marian University.
The Sabres earned four quick corner opportunities in the first 20 minutes of play today, but were unable to capitalize due to a strong Cougar backfield.
Finally, in the 26th minute of play, Marian connected for a goal when its leading goal scorer, Olivia Meerdink, earned a breakaway and knocked in a clear shot from the middle of the box past goalkeeper
Madeline Kroll. Less than three minutes later, the Sabres earned yet another breakaway and pulled away with a 2-0 lead.
With the first half clock beginning to expire, it seemed the Cougars were heading into the halftime break scoreless. However, at the 2:09 mark, junior
Sierra Poor dished a clean pass to fellow classmate
Samantha Wozniak. From nearly 25 yards out, Wozniak sent Poor's pass cruising into the upper right corner of the net with no chance for a stoppage from the Sabre's keeper. Wozniak's goal cut the Cougar deficit in half as CUC trailed just 1-2 heading into the second half.Â
By the end of the first half, shots were evened up at nine-all.
CUC and Marian continued to battle for the remainder of the match. But with 15 minutes to go, the Sabres scored their third of the day and seemed to put the game out of reach. With its second two-goal lead of the game, Marian continued to take shots and create space around the Cougar defense.
As the clock nearly expired, CUC's offense scrambled with the Sabre's defenders and
Esmeralda Torres put the ball in the back of the net. Despite Torres' goal, the Cougars had to settle for the 3-2 defeat.
At the end of the match, Concordia-Chicago out shot Maria University 16-14. The Sabres had 10 corner kicks on the day while CUC earned six of its own.Â
