Cougars Upset Regionally Ranked IIT

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Concordia-Chicago (3-9; 3-2 NACC) took on Illinois Institute of Technology  (9-2-1; 4-1 NACC ) in a homecoming week matchup this evening, eventually upsetting the No. 7 regionally ranked Scarlet Hawks, 2-0.

CUC looked to rebound after a tough 3-2 loss to Marian last Saturday. ITT would not be a pushover, however, as they came in ranked No. 7 in the Central Region. The Cougars showed no sign of fear in their opponent's resumé and struck the first and only goal of the first half to put them in the driver's seat. A late second half goal would spring CUC to a 2-0 lead and put them in firm position to win the game.

Both teams found little room to work offensively early on, but the resilient Cougar squad finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 29th minute. Esmeralda Torres handled a header from 20 yards out and snuck one right over the goalie's outstretched arms to give CUC the first lead of the match. Torres' third goal of the season was assisted by Kara Scholtens and Cecilia Kochanek. The scoring in the first half started and stopped with that goal, and the Cougars would go into the half with a 1-0 lead.

Searching for their third conference win, CUC still had a long road ahead of them. Similar to the first half, scoring did not start until the latter half of the period.

Sydney Fuller hustled her way to her first assist of the game after she made a diving pass to a streaking Emily Ordonez right in front of the goalie. After Ordonez received the ball she hooked one into the right corner of the goal for her third score of the season and for a 2-0 Concordia-Chicago lead.

Maddie Kroll and company would keep the ITT offense from scoring and the Cougars would pull off the major upset. CUC would not only give the Hawks just their second loss of the season, they also would be the first team to shut them out.

Concordia-Chicago will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 6 for Senior Day against Edgewood College. Game-time is set for 10:30 a.m. Senior athletes will be introduced 15 minutes prior to the game.
