Bluejays Use Hot Start To Get Past Cougars

Elmhurst, Ill.- Concordia Chicago begins this week on the road tonight at Elmhurst College.  Elmhurst used a strong first ten minutes of the first half to build a stable lead.  The Bluejays strong first half let them play about even with the Cougars the rest of the way.  Elmhurst went on to win at home 13-8 and push the Cougars to a 2-7 overall record.

Sydney Fuller led the Cougars with four points, including two goals and two assists.  Margaret Doane and Sydney LaTurner each had three points, each scoring two goals and one point.  In her return in net, Krystal Phillips made 15 saves on the chilly night for a .536 save percentage.

The Bluejays came out of the gate on fire.  Isabel Walker marched down the field for two very quick goals in the first minute of the half of the game to take an early 2-0 lead.  However, CUC's Doane came right back down the field to find the back of the net to cut the Bluejays lead to 2-1.  Midway through the first half, Elmhurst managed to score four straight goals to take a 6-1 lead.  Concordia Chicago did have chances, but couldn't convert on the attack.

After the timeout, Elmhurst scored two more goals to extend their lead to seven.  With seven minutes left in the half, Fuller scored her 13th goal scored of the year to cut the Bluejays to 8-2.  Minute later, Doane tallied another one in the goal column for her second of the game to cut the lead to five.  The Bluejays responded with two goals of their own to regain their seven goal lead.  Concordia Chicago came right back with another two goal stretch of their own with Fuller scoring her second of the game and Anna Kellar netting her first to trail the Bluejays 10-5 at halftime.

The Bluejays began the second half like the first scoring two quick goals to again, regain their seven goal lead.  CUC's offense was off to a slow start, but managed to net their first goal of the half when LaTurner shot one by the Elmhurst goalkeeper to cut the Bluejays lead to 12-6.  LaTurner added another one minutes later on the attack to cut the lead to five again.  Elmhurst's defense started to tighten up a bit to limit the Cougars chances on offense and on the attack, they were slow and methodical to pick their scoring opportunities.  With that, the Bluejays went on to hold on to their lead and win by the final score of 13-8.

Concordia-Chicago (2-7, 1-3 MWLC) will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on Augsburg College in a MWLC matchup.  Opening draw is set for 7:00pm.
