Offense Sparks Cougars In Win Over Monmouth

Monmouth, Ill.- On a cold, wet, and windy spring day, the Cougar women were hoping to get the taste out of their mouth from last game after a heart breaking double overtime loss to Aurora.  Despite the weather, the offense came out hot out of the gate scoring six of the first seven goals of the game.  Monmouth closed the lead, but the Cougars still held a three goal lead at halftime.  The second half was more evenly matched, but the Cougars hung on to win by the final score of 15-10.

Margaret Doane and Sydney Fuller each had a phenomenal day for Concordia Chicago.  Doane had five goals and six groundballs.  Fuller had a stellar stat line with three goals, four assists, five groundballs, two caused turnovers, and seven draw controls.

The beginning of the game started off very well for the Cougars.  Hannah Johnson got things going with a goal cutting into the middle of the field.  Monmouth got it right back, but the tie was short lived as the Cougars continued to press on offense.  Doane scored three goals in a matter of four minutes to give CUC a three goal lead and that forced a Monmouth timeout.  Out of the timeout, the momentum was still in CUC favor as Sandra Acevedo got in on the action and give CUC their largest lead of the game at 6-1.  Monmouth came back with two straight goals and cut the lead to three.  Late in the half, both teams traded goals as Fuller got on the board for Concordia Chicago and the Cougars took a 7-4 lead into halftime.

The first ten minutes of the second half, both teams kept trading goals and keep the CUC lead at three.  Midway through the half is when the Cougars really started to pour it on.  Fuller kicked things off to put CUC up four, Monmouth got one back, but then Concordia Chicago rattled off three straight goals from Elizabeth Cyrwus, Anna Kellar, and Doane to take a commanding six goal lead.  The fighting Scots tried to rally late, but it was too late as the Cougars won 15-10

Concordia-Chicago (3-10, 2-6 MWLC) returns to action Tuesday, April 17, when they travel to Kenosha, Wis. to take on Carthage College.  Opening draw is set for 7:00pm.
