Cougars Cage The Cardinals For First Win

River Forest, Ill.- Concordia-Chicago Women's lacrosse began their spring break with a game against Concordia University Ann Arbor. CUC looked to rebound against CUAA after a tough loss to Hanover College.  The first half was mainly all Cougars as they controlled possession most of the half building an 8-4 lead.  In the second half, things got a little dicey as the Cardinals were attempting a comeback, but the Cougars hung on to win by the final score of 12-9.

Brian Patterson on the win against CUAA, "We came out with some great energy and got a quick lead doing a lot of things that we coached them to do.  We lost our heads a bit, but we reigned it in to get the victory, but we still have a lot of work to do, however we can still make it a successful season and one that everybody is proud of."

Anna Kellar led CUC with 5 goals on the afternoon, followed by a stellar performance by Sydney Fuller who netted a goal and five assists.

Offense for both sides got in going early as both teams scored early. Two minutes in the Cardinals goal was answered as Cougars midfielder Kellar got by defenders to make it 1-1. Margaret Doane followed up Kellar's goal with two of her own, including a free position goal to give the Cougars 3-1 lead. Fuller dished out one of her five assists to Kellar to help her score her second goal of the game and then Fuller was awarded with her third goal of the season on the following possession to extend the CUC lead to 5-1. For the second time in the first half Fuller assisted Kellar to make the score 6-1 and give Kellar the hat trick in the first half. Fuller was feeding everyone in the first half when she assisted Sandra Acevado with a goal in a man-up situation to push the CUC lead to 7-2. Elizabeth Cyrwus was the next to strike for the Cougars. A free position shot was granted to Cyrwus and she capitalized on the opportunity to score her first goal of the season and give Concordia-Chicago an 8-3 lead. At the end of the half CUC led CUAA 8-4.

Opening up the second half, the Cougars looked to bust the game wide open. However, the Cardinals had other plans.  CUAA climbed back into the game headlined by a quick goal coming from Greyson Papp. Doane quickly stopped the bleeding with a free position goal and her third of the match to give the Cougars a much more comfortable lead. On a Free position attempt, Fuller created space for herself to set up a beautiful goal to Kellar to give the Cougars an 11-6 lead.  Ten minutes left in the match, CUC found themselves up on the Cardinals with an 11-8 lead looking to hold on.  Kellar netted her fifth goal of the game to give Concordia-Chicago some breathing room and go on to win by the final score of 12-9.

Concordia-Chicago (1-1) looks to build off of this win when they face off against Cornell College on March 10 at 1:00 p.m. in River Forest.
