Panthers Defense Shuts Down Cougars In Season Opener

River Forest, Ill.- The Concordia University Chicago's women's lacrosse team opened up their season at home against Hanover College this afternoon. CUC looked to build off of their 6-11 record last year, while having high expectations coming into 2018. In the first half, the Cougars started out hot but fell behind going into halftime 8-4. In the second half, it was all Hanover as CUC couldn't find the back of the net as the Panthers went on to win 11-4.

Sydney Fuller did not take long to put the Cougars on the board scoring the first goal 30 seconds into the 2018 season. Hanover College tied it up five minutes later to make the score 1-1. Sandra Acevedo answered right back dodging defenders in front of the goal to score her first goal of the season and put Concordia-Chicago back on top 2-1. Minutes later, back to back goals erased the Cougar lead and gave the Panthers their first lead of the match.

Halfway through the first half Anna Kellar cut into a two goal deficit with a goal coming after a yellow card by Hanover to make the score 4-3. Hanover took control of the game again with two more goals to halt the Cougars momentum. Fuller scored her second goal of the match with ten minutes left and pushed the score to 6-4. However, goals seemingly came in pairs for the Panthers as they scored two goals before halftime to make it 8-4, which was their largest lead of the match.

Hanover started the second half with two more quick scores to widen the margin to 10-4. Moving along into the second half there was not much scoring for either team as the Hanover goalkeeper had a sensational second half keeping CUC scoreless the entire second half. Hanover added a goal late to spoil the home and season opener for the Cougars.

Concordia-Chicago (0-1) looks to get back on track this Sunday against Concordia-Ann Arbor. Game-time is set for 12pm in River Forest.
