April 8, 2017 - The Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team came into Saturday's match at Aurora University having scored 29 goals in their last two ganes (not counting the incomplete game from this past Wednesday). However, the offensive production was slowed down today, and the host Spartans used a scoring surge late in the first half to take control of the match and go on to a 14-4 victory over the Cougars.
The Spartans' Lauren Whitfield opened the scoring 10 minutes into the match and soon stretched their lead to 3-0. But
Sonja Sorensen got the Cougars on the board with 5:23 remaining in the half, and it looked as if the Cougars would be in good position to make a run in the second half. However, Aurora made it 4-1 with 1:59 left in the half and then struck for two goals in the final minute to take a more commanding five-goal lead into halfime.
The game got out of hand as Aurora began the second half with a 4-0 run, the first three by Andrea Colford for a natural hat trick. The Cougars finally ended the run as
Anna Kellar scored her team-leading 41st of the season. But the Spartans scored twice over the next three minutes to keep CUC underwraps. The final two Concordia-Chicago goals would come from
Sydney Fuller and
Hannah Johnson, the latter her first collegiate goal.
Aurora was credited with 30 shots for the game to CUC's 16.
Krystal Phillips added to her lead as the Division III leader in saves with 14.
The Cougars (4-9) will return home on Thursday yo host the Illinois Institute of Technology.
