Illinois Tech Uses Strong Second Half to Push Past Cougars

April 13, 2017 - Coming into the game today, Concordia-Chicago knew they had to play physically to slow down the high-octane offense of Illinois Tech.  A top of the conference, the Cougars were chomping at the bit to hand the Scarlet Hawks their first loss in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference.  CUC had a strong first half, but Illinois Tech took it up another gear in the second half to pull away from the Cougars to win by the final score of 21-8.

The first half featured a lot of back and forth play from both teams as the largest lead from either team was one.  in the first thirty minutes, it featured seven ties and six lead changes.  The Cougars really had IIT on their heels for much of the half as the Scarlet Hawks were primarily focused on CUC scorers Anna Kellar and Sydney Fuller, but had no answer for Margaret Doane.  Doane and Sandra Acevedo provided six of the seven first half goals highlighted by a Doane goal where she put her defender in a spin cycle and scored off the spin to tie the game up at three.  Illinois Tech had five different goal scorers in the first half to take an 8-7 lead heading into halftime.

The second half left a lot to be desired for the Cougars as the Scarlet Hawks put the pedal to the floor and just dominated.  Within the first five minutes, Illinois Tech quickly extended their lead to four and didn't look back from there.  Out of the fourteen goals scored, IIT scored thirteen of them to win by the final score of 21-8.

Doane led the Cougars in scoring on the day with four goals, while Acevedo earned her first career hat trick.  IIT was led by Isabella Rubin with six goals and Madison Meredith with five goals and two assists to lead the charge.

The Cougars (4-10, 1-8 MWLC) return to action April 22 as they head to Mequon, WI to take on rival Concordia Wisconsin.  The start time for the match is set for 4 p.m.
