April 2, 2017- Coming off their first home and conference victory yesterday afternoon, the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team wanted to continue to ride the momentum against Carroll University. The Pioneers are a struggling team coming into the match today at 1-8. The Cougars knew they wanted to get ahead quickly so they bury any confidence that Carroll had. CUC did just that by jumping on the Pioneers early and not look back winning by the final score of 13-5.
The beginning of the game started just how the Cougars wanted as they got out on the Pioneers with four quick goals, two of them by junior captain
Anna Kellar. You know the offense is rolling when Kellar is getting open looks. The Cougars attackers
Jessica Jaimes and
Melissa Franco cut into the middle of the field wanting to set up teammates like Kellar and
Sydney Fuller for easy goals. Carroll cut the lead to 5-2, but that was as close as they were going to get as the Cougars closed out the first half strong. CUC scored four unanswered goals from four different players, highlighted by
Sonja Sorensen who had a goal and two assists to lead 9-2 after a half of play.
The second half the Cougars played more of a defensive game trying to limit as many chances as they could from the Pioneers. Freshman goaltender
Krystal Phillips had a fantastic game in net making 15 saves and having a save percentage of .737 on the game. Even with the defensive minded half, CUC was still able to extend their lead behind two goals from
Margaret Doane.
The leading scorers for the Cougars were Kellar and Doane each having five points. Kellar on the day had four goals and an assist, while Doane had three goals and two assists. Fuller also chipped in four goals, a team leading ten groundballs and seven caused turnovers to lead Concordia-Chicago's offense.
The Cougars (4-8, 1-6 MWLC) return to action this Wednesday, April 5th, as they host Elmhurst University as part of the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse one love game. Face-off is set for 5:00pm.
