March 26, 2017 - The Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team went into this afternoon's match at Wartburg College looking to split their weekend road trip to Iowa and snap a five-game losing streak after road wins over Trine University and Olivet College just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, as was the case in yesterday's loss to Loras College, the Cougars saw a good first half overshadowed by a rough second half, and the result today was a tough 6-5 loss to the Knights.
Wartburg incurred a yellow card at the outset of the game, and CUC began with a man-up situation. The Cougars received immediate dividends as
Anna Kellar scored 80 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. Wartburg would draw even on a free-position shot by Alex Pollock, but the visitors soon were awarded their second man-up situation and needed just a few seconds after the restart to make it 2-2. This time, it was
Sydney Fuller hitting the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. The Cougars soon extended their lead on goals by
Sonja Sorensen and Fuller again, and CUC was looking good at the half, leading by a score of 4-1.
As the rain continued to fall, the Knights slowly but surely began to gain momentum. Six minutes in, Wartburg scored twice in 70 seconds to get within a goal. However, the Cougars clamped down on defense and looked to have scored a big goal when Kellar tallied for her second of the game and 29th of the season.Â
Unfortunately for CUC, Kellar's goal was their last of the match. Wartburg scored at the 7:59 mark to make it a 4-3 game and then tied the game less than two minutes later on Pollock's goal. Pollok then netted the game-winner with 4:17 remaining, and the Cougars were unable to muster a tying goal and send the game into overtime.Â
Wartburg finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots, 11-4 in the second half. CUC goalie
Krystal Phillips was credited with 11 saves.
The Cougars will now get ready for a non-conference match with Carthage College on Wednesday. Opening draw is set for 6 p.m.from Kenosha, Wisconsin.Â
