March 25, 2017Â - After a tough home stretch, the Concordia University Chicago Cougar women's lacrosse team took to the road for a back-to-back weekend in Iowa. The first contest of the weekend would see the visiting Cougars taking on Loras Duhawks in cold rainy conditions in Dubuque, Iowa. The Cougars would fall behind early, but pull back within one at the halftime break, but unfortunately for CUC, the Duhawks clamped down and put together a near flawless second half, taking down the Cougars 13-4.
Â
The Cougars would find themselves in a hole early. The Duhawks found the net four separate times in the first 12 minutes to grab control early. CUC got things moving offensively after CUC tightened up their defense.
Margaret Doane found the back of the cage first for the Cougars with 16:38 remaining in the half, her 14
th goal of the season. CUC's next goals came just under two minutes apart. The first came on a free position attempt by
Jessica Jaimes, her first goal of the season. CUC then pulled within one with 11:53 left in the half on
Melissa Franco's first career goal. The Duhawks ended the Cougar run with a goal with just under four minutes left, but
Sydney Fuller was able to pull CUC back within one with her 14
th goal of the season, making it 5-4 Loras at the halftime break.
Â
Unfortunately for CUC 5-4 would be as close as they would come on the day. Loras took all of the momentum and ran with it in the second half, scoring eight unanswered goals, leading to the 13-4 win over the visiting Cougars.
Krystal Phillips continued to impress in goal, facing 40 shots in total making 19 saves.
Â
The Cougars (2-6, 0-5 MWLC) will conclude the back-to-back weekend in Iowa when they take on the Wartburg Knights tomorrow at noon in Waverly, Iowa.Â
