Tough Home Stand Ends for CUC Women in Loss to Hamline

March 19, 2017 - The Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team ended their season-long three-game home stand this afternoon against Hamline University. Coming off the first two wins in program history, the Cougars had since have lost three straight, the first two by a combined three goals. Concordia-Chicago was looking to break the losing streak against a tough Hamline team that beat CUC by 15 last season. Close throughout much of the game, the Pipers pulled away in the middle of the second half to win by the final score of 15-6.

The first half got off to a quick start for the Pipers as Lexus Tatge was able to put Hamline on the board 36 seconds into the game. The game slowed down after that for the Cougars, but they managed to be trailing just 4-3 midway through the half with two goals from Anna Kellar and one goal for Sonja Sorensen. Hamline's leading goal scorer Dana Almquist took over as she scored four goals in the half with her quickness to get around CUC defenders, pushing the Pipers' lead to 7-3 after one half of play.

Sydney Fuller started the Cougars off with a goal in the first two minutes of the second half to cut the Pipers' lead to three. Ten minutes went by before Hamline's Almquist continued to hurt the Cougars. In a matter of a minute, the Pipers extended their lead to six with two goals from Almquist and a goal by Alicia Monserrate-Novotny. However, the Cougars came back with a fight, netting two goals from Sorensen and Kellar to cut the lead to 10-6 with eight minutes to go in the game.  From that point on, the Cougars only accounted for one shot in the final eight minutes as Hamline's defense stiffened. The Pipers were able to score five unanswered goals to win by the final score of 15-6.

For the Cougars, Kellar had three goals, one ground ball, and two draw controls, while Sorensen had two goals and one assist on the day. The Pipers leading scorer was Almquist, who had a game high seven goals on nine shots, one ground ball, and was 3-4 on free position shots.

The Cougars (2-5, 0-3 MWLC) return to action next Saturday as they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to take on Loras College. Face-off is set for 2 p.m. central time.
