March 18, 2017 - After a tough two-goal loss in Wednesday's home opener, the Concordia-Chicago women's lacrosse team looked to make amends in the first of a two-game weekend series this afternoon. The Auggies of Augsburg College in Minnesota provided the opposition, coming into River Forest with a 3-1 record. The Cougars lost last year's contest 16-1, and while the Cougars were much improved in this year's matchup. it was not enough as Augsburg took a 13-7 victory.
It took just 53 seconds to match last year's goal output as
Sonja Sorensen scored close in. But the Auggies tied the score about five minutes later and added two more goals, one on a man-up situation, for a 3-1 lead.
Â
The score remained 3-1 until the 9:49 mark when
Anna Kellar converted a pass from
Sydney Fuller to make it a one-goal game. But the Auggies answered quickly, the first of three occasions on the day, with a goal 14 seconds later. Augsburg added their second man-up goal two minutes later to take a 5-2 lead.
This time, the Cougars had an immediate answer. Kellar netted her second of the day 30 seconds later off a feed from
Margaret Doane. The quick scoring continued as Doane won the ensuing draw control, came downfield and scored her first of the day. Suddenly, the Cougars were within a goal at 5-4.
Just as the Cougars looked to have made it a game again, the final three minutes of the half saw Augsburg score three straight goals, two by their top scorer Helena Nguyen. The last two were scored 10 seconds apart, and the visitors had a four-goal cushion at the half, 8-4.
The Cougars looked to capture back some momentum after the break as Doane struck again in the first 90 seconds. But for the third time, the Auggies had an answer with a goal 50 seconds later. Augsburg scored the next two goals after that for a six-goal lead, and although Kellar and Doane each netted a goal later in the half, CUC would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Augsburg fired 26 shots to Concordia's 14, and the Cougars had 26 turnovers to the Auggies' 21. CUC goalie
Krystal Phillips made nine saves.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Cougars as they host Hamline University on Sunday in a noon start.
