River Forest, Ill.- Concordia-Chicago women's soccer came into the match holding down the sixth spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, which would earn them a playoff birth. After a disappointing 2-0 loss to Dominican on Wednesday, the Cougars looked to rebound against the Falcons of Concordia-Wisconsin on Senior Day. CUW took a 1-0 lead in the first half as it was enough for the Falcons to edge out the Cougars despite being outshot in the second half.
The first 25 minutes of the first half produced little offense from both sides as it was mostly played in the midfield. In the 29th minute, the Cougars had a prime scoring opportunity when the Falcons had some miscommunication on a pass that left the CUW's goalkeeper and Sarah LaCost chasing after the ball in the box. The goalkeeper cleared it right to Maci Killman, but Killman sailed it high of the net. Concordia-Wisconsin finally got on the board in the 36th minute when Allison McElwee dribbled around defenders and put it in the right side of the net for a 1-0 Falcons lead. Concordia-Wisconsin continued to play great defense heading into halftime holding a 1-0 lead over Concordia-Chicago.
Early in the second half, LaCost had a free kick from about 27 yards the CUW goalkeeper had to make a jumping save to her right to keep the Falcons lead at 1-0. Much of the half was played on the Falcons side of the field where the Cougars kept generating shots, but no real scoring threats. In the 84th minute, Concordia-Chicago had their best chance when Esmeralda Torres was alone in front of the net when a loose ball found her foot, but the Falcons goalkeeper made a tremendous save to keep their lead. Unfortunately for CUC, they couldn't find the back of the net late in the match and the Falcons won by the final score of 1-0.
The Cougars (5-10-2, 4-5 NACC) return to action next Wednesday, October 25th, as they host Aurora University for their final home match of the year. Kick-off is set for 2:00pm.
