Oct. 18, 2017 - Looking to hold on to or even strengthen their position in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings, the Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team traveled down Division Street this afternoon for a contest with the Dominican University Stars. The Stars have been riding high this season and, although the Cougars gave them a tough battle, Dominican scored two second-half goals to take a 2-0 victory.
Each team had a couple of scoring chances in the early going, but the first truly good chance came in the 15th minute when Dominican was awarded a penalty kick. However, CUC keeper
Allyson Krajnak rose to the occasion as she dove to her right to parry the low shot and push it wide of the post. Dominican had the better of play territorially in the half, but Krajnak stood tall, denying NACC-leading scorer Josseline Williams twice, and the game remained 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.Â
The Cougars began the second half with a few early opportunities, but shots by
Emma Stone and
Sarah LaCost went wide, and
Esther Annoreno had her shot saved by DU's keeper Abby Brown.
The Stars finally broke through in the 63rd minute after the Cougars were whistled for a foul on the left side from about 20 yards out. Kaitlyn Tripp's shot was right on target, curling between Krajnak and the far post. Dominican maintained momentum after the goal, and they doubled their lead 10 minutes later as Williams broke in and beat Krajnak fora 2-0 lead.
Concordia-Chicago managed just one more shot for the game, but Brown corraled the shot off Stone's foot. CUC took a total of seven shots, with Brown being crediteed with two saves. Dominican took 15 shots, with Krajnak making seven saves.
The Cougars will return to action on Friday afternoon when they host Concordia University Wisconsin. The team will host its Senior Day, which was postponed from last Saturday.
