River Forest, Ill.- The Concordia-Chicago women's soccer program was riding high coming into the match today against Marian after two straight conference wins over Lakeland and Alverno. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Sabres had other ideas striking two late goals in the first half and adding two more goals in the second half to shutout the Cougars 4-0.
In the first half, both teams were playing an open game where each team had eight shots and getting plenty of opportunities to put the ball on net. However, the Cougars had the two best scoring opportunities up to that point where
Katie Biga fired one off the crossbar with the rebound sitting there for
Gabriella Wagoner, but the Marian goalkeeper made an excellent diving save to keep it scoreless. Another opportunity came in the 22nd minute for the Cougars when
Samantha Goodlett found a loose ball on a cross, but put it off the post and no second chance with the Marian clear. In the final five minutes of the first half, Marian caught Concordia-Chicago out of position on defense and buried two goals to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Cougars had seven shots on goal, but none that were a real scoring threat to the Sabres. Marian added two more goals to their lead and finished with the 4-0 shutout win over the Cougars.
The Cougars (3-7-2, 2-2 NACC) will return to action Saturday, October 7th, when they travel to Madison, Wis. to take on Edgewood College in a big NACC matchup. Kick-off is set for 6:30pm.
