Sept. 28, 2016 -Â The Concordia-Chicago Cougars and Dominican Stars met on the Cougars' pitch this afternoon in the first battle in the newly-instituted River Forest Rivalry Cup. The Stars got the early jump in the competition as they took charge of the match in the early going and cruised to a 7-0 win over the Cougars.
Rain fell from the outset as the Cougars made an early foray into the Stars' zone. However, the Stars soon cleared their zone and moved into the Cougars' end of the field. In the eighth minute, DU's Nestor Ascencio began his big day by one-touching a pass from the left side into the net. The lead became 2-0 when a Stars' corner kick squirted in front of the goal and eluded the defenders and keeper to find the left corner. Dominican later added goals in the 18th and 33rd minutes to take a 4-0 lead at the half.
Ascencio continued to torment CUC in the second half. He scored his second of the match on another one-touch near the goal and then assisted on the Stars' final two goals in the last eight minutes.
The Cougars managed just three shots in the first half, with the best scoring chance coming fromÂ
Roberto Avila, whose 35-yard rocket missed just wide of the left post. In the second half,Â
Dan Krajewski tested DU keeper Gabriel Gongora, but Gongora made his only save of the contest. In the final minutes,Â
Gibril Jobe had an opportunity, only to fire wide.
Concordia-Chicago (2-5-0, 0-2-0 NACC) will look to snap their three-game skid on Saturday when they travel to Edgewood College in Madison, WI. Kickoff has been rescheduled to 5:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
