Late Goals Costly For Cougar Men

October 1, 2016- The Concordia University Chicago Men's Soccer team traveled up North to Madison, Wisconsin to take on Edgewood College in a key conference matchup. The Cougars were able to play the Eagles tough throughout the match, but late goals by Edgewood proved to be the difference as CUC fell by a final score of 4-2.

Like the women's game before them, the Eagles men got off to a hot start in the third minute when Garrett Lee put Edgewood on top with an easy tap in goal assisted on a good cross from Jesse Greenwood.  Ten minutes later, Concordia came storming back with an abundant of scoring chances.  Fabian Robles tracked down a loose ball with his shot hitting the crossbar, Arkadiusz Szlachta followed that shot with a tap in goal to even the score up at one.  For most of the 1st half, CUC controlled most of they play generating quite a few scoring opportunities off set pieces and corners.  However, in the 33rd minute, Roberto Aragon made the save of the year diving to his left off a free kick from Edgewood's Henry Simon to keep the game tied at one heading into the 2nd half.

In the 2nd half, it was a very open game as each team had multiple scoring opportunities.  Cougars had a golden scoring opportunity off a 25 yard free kick by Roberto Avila in the 62nd minute, but it sailed just high of the crossbar.  In the 69th minute, Edgewood took the lead on a Jesse Greenwood cross to Henry Simon for an easy tap in goal to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.  Short time after, Cougars kept pressing in the offensive part of the field and finally persevered  into a game tying goal by Fabian Robles from the middle of the box.  The goal seemed to give CUC confidence in their play as they played with great energy throughout the rest of the match, generating more scoring opportunities than Edgewood.  However, it was the last chance that the Eagles needed.  In the 86th minute, Edgewood's Garrett Lee gave a great cross to Sean Surtees to give the Eagles a late 3-2 lead.  That proved to be the game winning goal as the Eagles tacked on another late goal to win by the final of 4-2.

The Cougars (2-7 0-3 NACC) return to action next Wednesday as they travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take on Wisconsin Lutheran at 7 p.m.
