May 2, 2016Â - As the old saying goes, records are meant to be broken. For the Concordia University Chicago Softball team, they have taken this saying to a whole new level. The accomplishments and accolades are plentiful for the 2016 Cougars, and they are not done yet! The Cougars will continue to look to make history as they make their second straight appearance in the NACC tournament beginning Thursday on the campus of Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
So how did the team get here? The season started off in Ann Arbor, Michigan with a tough opening indoor series that was split. A long layoff did not cool off the Cougars. They would head to Florida and set their first record by getting off to the best start in school history, rattling off nine wins in a row, a clean sweep of the spring trip for the first time ever. They tied the school record for consecutive wins with a tenth straight win in game one over CCIW power North Central College.
The Cougars then entered the rigorous NACC schedule, looking for a school-record second straight NACC Tournament berth. They enjoyed three straight weekends of either 3-1 or 4-0 records in the conference that put them right in the mix. They qualified on the final weekend behind two big comeback wins over MSOE with the playoffs on the line.
As far as good omens go, the Cougars will have one going back to Alverno, where they used late-inning magic to rally over the Inferno on April 23. CUC won game one of the doubleheader and in doing so, broke the Concordia all-time softball wins record with 20. The Cougars won the game 5-3, getting four runs with the tying and go-ahead runs scored with two outs. CUC added four more wins onto their continuing record to end the season 24-13.
CUC softball has broken countless long-standing individual and team softball records and they are not done yet. CUC will look to break more records in the NACC tournament this weekend and continue to extend the 2016 season. "It's a testament to our seniors," said CUC head coach
Sarah O'Malley-Fisher, "They came in with me and wanted to change a culture. It has been a long road, but we have earned everything that has been given to us. Everyone is 0-0 and anyone can find a way to win at any time. It has been a wonderful ride so far, and I cannot wait to watch us compete this weekend,"
The Cougars will travel to Milwaukee Wednesday night to prepare for the 10:00 a.m matchup on Thursday against Benedictine. The full bracket can be found at
