March 30, 2016 -Â The Cougar women's lacrosse team took the field against host Carroll University this evening, hoping that tonight's game would be a breakthrough for them. Instead, the Pioneers dashed the Cougars' hopes early, scoring four goals in the first six minutes and taking control en oute to a 13-4 win over CUC.
The first minute of the game saw CUC goalieÂ
Melissa Franco (Wood Dale, IL/Fenton)Â made a big save on a Pioneer attacker. Moments later, it was the Cougars' turn for a scoring chance, butÂ
Sydney Fuller (Elkhart, IN/Northridge)Â was deenied at close range. Carroll came back down the field, and they finished off a close-in chance to take the lead. Within the next four minutes, the lead ballooned to 4-0 beforeÂ
Anna Kellar (Collinsville, IL/Metro-East Lutheran)Â put CUC on the board. Kellar finished off a pass from Fuller directly in front to make the score 4-1. However, the Pioneers answered 30 seconds later, and they soon added another tally to lead midway through the first half at 6-1.
Carroll added a seventh tally before CUC got on the board again.Â
Margaret Doane (Glen Ellyn, IL/homeschooled) was fouled in the center of the arc and was awarded a free position attempt. She promptly cashed in with a high shot to give the Cougars their second goal with 11:21 remaining. However, the hosts scored the final two goals of the half, including one with four seconds in the half  to take a 9-2 lead at the half.
The teams traded goals in the early minutes of the second half, CUC's tally coming on Fuller's free position shot. Â Carroll scored three more goals for the half while CUC added one more asÂ
Sonja Sorensen (Berwyn, IL/Walther Lutheran)Â cut across the goal mouth and slipped a shot past the Carroll goalie. The score stood at 13-4 with 4:30 remaining when severe weather descended upon Schneider Stadium, and the game was called at that point.
Concordia-Chicago will return home and prepare to host Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday afternooon at 4:00.
