Mar. 2, 2016Â - With the first-ever home game out of the way for the Concordia University Chicago women's lacrosse team, they would continue their season of firsts on a chilly but sunny day in their first road contest of the year against the Elmhurst College Bluejays. The Cougars fought hard, but the Bluejays proved to have too much offensive firepower for the Cougars to overcome, falling by a final score of 15-2.
Despite a strong effort made by the Cougars, the Bluejays scored the first ten goals of the game. With just over seven minutes remaining in the half, the Cougars scored their first ever road goal in program history.Â
Margaret Doane (Glen Ellyn, IL/homeschooled)Â took the ball after the restart and weaved through the center of the field, firing a shot that bounced past the Elmhurst goalie on the left side.
Sydney Fuller (Elkhart, IN/Northridge)Â continue to apply pressure for the Cougars with just over four minutes left in the half. Weaving back and forth through the defenders, she had a good look with a shot on net but was denied by the Elmhurst goalie.
The second half got underway under the lights at Elmhurst. The Bluejays would score the first goal of the half, but it would be
Sonja Sorensen (Berwyn, IL/Walther Lutheran) for CUC who took advantage of a free position attempt and crashed towards the net, fitting a shot just inside the left post for her second goal of the season. The Cougars would not get many other scoring chances though for the reminder of the game.
Sorensen led CUC with four shots on goal for the game, and also picked up three ground balls.
Anna Kellar (Collinsville, IL/Metro-East Lutheran) also ran down three ground balls for the Cougars in the game.
The Cougars (0-2) will be back in action on Saturday as they continue their five-game road swing, this time at Beloit College with opening draw set for 1:00 p.m.
