October 22, 2016- The Concordia University Chicago soccer team traveled to Mequon, Wisconsin to take on rival Concordia-Wisconsin in an important Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup where a spot in the conference tournament could be clinched by the Cougars with a win. The Cougars got into the groove late in the first half where they were to manage three goals in an eight minute span. With the Cougars 4-0 win, it was the first win in program history against Concordia-Wisconsin, and clinched a playoff spot in the NACC tournament.
It was a slow start to the first half where the Concordia University Wisconsin controlled most of the play. The Falcons best chance of the half was off a Cougar misplay in the box that led to a free kick Abigail Freeland that hit the left post. From there on, the Cougars dominated play starting in the 37th minute. Senior Elizabeth Sanders found a loose ball in the box and tapped it in for an easy goal to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, CUC earned a free kick that found the foot of Krista Pojero, she put her shot off the crossbar and Katie Biga was there to tap in the rebound to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The Cougars weren't done there, four minutes later, Emma Stone sent a cross into the box from about 25 yards out, and Sanders was able to run it down and head in her second goal of the game to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Cougars didn't let the half lose any of their momentum. Cougars were able to hold off the Falcon pressure that led to a CUC counter attack. Sanders found Alisha Johnson all alone in the middle of the box. Johnson was able to bury her shot in the back of the net to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead. Much of the 2nd half was the Cougars defending to earn the clean sheet. With the Cougars win, this will be the 2nd time in the program's history to make the NACC conference tournament. Allyson Krajnak worked the clean sheet in net making five saves in route to the Cougars seventh shutout of the season.
The Cougars (10-7-1, 6-3 NACC) will close out the regular season on Wednesday when they take on NACC leading MSOE. With a playoff berth secured, this match will have everything to do with seeding. CUC currently sits in third. With a win they will be awarded a first round home match in the tournament.
