Oct. 26, 2016 - The Concordia University Chicago Cougars entered today's match already knowing that they have qualified for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament beginning on Saturday. Today's match against MSOE had everything to do with where that match would be played. CUC played the regular-season champion Raiders very tough, controlling a good portion of play, but MSOE was able to find the back of the net three times to spoil the home finale for the Cougars 3-1.
The Cougars were able to get two quality looks on net in the first half. The first of those came from
Alisha Johnson, but her shot was saved. The second was a
Sarah LaCost shot that went just high through traffic inside the box.
MSOE broke the tie in the 43
rd minute. MSOE sent a ball long for their leading goal scorer Sara Travia. The Cougars made an attempt to clear the ball away, but the clear attempt deflected off the body of Travia and into the Cougar net for the 1-0 lead.
Concordia had the better of the play through the first 30 minutes of the second half, getting multiple shots off on the MSOE net, but were unable to break through. As the rain continued to pick up, so did the pace of the game.
Three goals would be scored in a 50-second span. The first was an MSOE goal on a perfectly placed chip shot from 15 yards out. CUC quickly answered with Johnson's fifth of the season. The goal came off a shot from 30 yards out, that slipped through the fingers of the MSOE goalie and just across the goal line to pull CUC within 2-1. Unfortunately MSOE answered 34 seconds later with a big insurance goal to make it 3-1 Raiders.
"I thought overall our game plan was good today," remarked CUC head coach
Chris Brown following the match. "I thought in a lot of ways we were doing exactly what we wanted. I thought we got after it in the second half. We raised the urgency in the second half. It's a disappointing result, but hopefully we get to see them again."
The Cougars (10-8-1, 6-4 NACC) now prepare for the postseason. They will open the NACC Tournament at Aurora at 10 a.m. on Saturday from Vago Field.
