Cougar Men Can't Keep Up with Spartans

Oct. 19, 2016 - The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team hosted Aurora University this afternoon, hoping to push the winning streak to two after an exciting 1-0 win over Rockford University three days ago. Unfortunately, the visiting Spartans had other ideas as they outshot the Cougars 38-12 and took a 3-1 victory.

Aurora went on the attack from the outset, with CUC goalkeeper Roberto Aragon making the first of his 12 saves just a few minutes into the game. The Spartans hit the crossbar on another try before eventually opening the scoring in the 10th minute. Collin Foreman stole the ball and dribbled into the box, beating Aragon one-on-one.

The Cougars looked to counter with the speed of Gibril Jobe, but the Spartan defense blocked one of his shots and the AU goalkeeper Zach McFarland saved another. Meanwhile, the Spartans' offense kept up the pressure against Aragon and his defenders. However, despite a 14-3 advantage in shots, the teams went into halftime with the score remaining 1-0.

In the second half, Aurora put some of their heaviest pressure of the day on Concordia-Chicago, at one point unleashing five shots within a span of slightly over a minute. The Spartans finally made it 2-0 when Ben Edith collected a pass from Nick Cataldi and slid a shot under Aragon in the 56th minute.

Concordia-Chicago rallied after the second goal and began to pressure the Aurora defenders. Then, in the 68th minute, a foul in the box resulted in the referee awarding CUC a penalty kick. Roberto Avila stepped up to the spot and beat McFarland low to the right corner for his fourth goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Over the next several minutes, it was CUC's turn to apply pressure, feeling the energy after the Avila goal. Jobe, Avila, Chris Arevalo and Fabian Robles all had opportunities but saw their shots either saved or blocked. The Spartans were able to hold the line, however, and eventually found their insurance goal in the 86th minutes. Aurora was given a direct kick, and Xavier Ortiz hit a rocket from 25 yards out that zipped past Aragon to account for the final score.

The Cougars (3-11-0, 1-7-0) will return to action on Saturday when they play at Concordia University Wisconsin.
