Sept. 27, 2015 -Â The Cougar men's soccer team battled for a positive result this afternoon and succeeded. Down 2-0 at the half, CUC scored twice and then fought Franklin College of Indiana through two overtime periods, finally settling for a 2-2 draw at Franklin's Faught Stadium.
The first half belonged to the Grizzlies as they took six shots to the Cougars' three. Two of Franklin's six found the net, starting with Cam Mattern's strike in the seventh minute. Blaine Fuhs then doubled the hosts' lead in the 36th minute. Meanwhile, Cody Chapman made two saves to keep the Grizzlies in the lead after 45 minutes.
The first half understandably brought about some adjustments for the Cougars. CUC head coachÂ
Micah Middendorf said, "I thought we responded very well after halftime. We moved a few of our players like
Joey Malme (Green Bay, WI/NEW Lutheran)Â andÂ
Dan Krajewski (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) to get them better involved in the play, and we started to push the attack much better."
In fact, the offense needed just 34 seconds from the start of the second half to produce a result.Â
Gibril Jobe (Berwyn, IL/Morton West)Â brought the ball down the right side, and his cross into the box was finished by Malme, who timed his run perfectly.Â
The Cougars kept pushing the attack, and they found the equalizer in the 58th minute. Once again, it was Malme as he took a long pass from Krajewski and dribbled toward the goal. As Chapman came out to challenge, Malme chipped the keeper for his fifth of the season.
Franklin regained a little bit of momentum as the half went on, butÂ
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East)Â made four saves to keep the Cougars even. Guzman also added a save in each of the 10-minute overtime periods to finish with six. Chapman finished with four saves as Franklin finished with 18 total shots to CUC's 12.
Concordia-Chicago (4-4-1) will return to conference play this Wednesday when they play at Division Street rival Dominican University.
