Sept. 30, 2015 -Â With two soccer battles in the Division Street rivalry being waged simultaneously on Wednesday afternoon, it was the Dominican Stars that would win the battle on the west side. The Stars defeated the Cougar men 1-0 on an overtime goal with 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
Concordia-Chicago head coach
Micah Middendorf said of the game, "We battled our socks off, but came up just short in our best full team effort of the year. Now it's up to our leaders to keep our heads up and get ready for Sunday."
The Cougars' stellar defensive play kept them in the game. The first half was a back and forth affair, with Dominican outpossessing the Cougars, leading to a Stars' shooting advantage of 8-3. CUC's best chance of the game came in the 44
th minute. After a Stars foul,
Roberto Avila (Cicero, IL/Morton East)Â struck the free kick from about 25 yards out. The kick looked good off of his foot, but it sailed just outside the upper corner of the goal and kept the game tied at the half.
The second half was just as well played. The Cougar defense put together a fantastic effort, keeping many potential shots from getting to goaltender
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East), who played a particularly good match. The senior took strong charge vocally and played aggressively, coming out and getting balls that found their way into the box. The Cougars fought off late pressure and kept the score 0-0 heading into the extra period.
The overtime period saw the Stars make their push, ripping off three shots in the period and not allowing the Cougars to take any. The highlight of the game though would be in the 95
th minute when a shot from point-blank range was saved by Guzman to keep the Cougars alive.
Unfortunately for the Cougars, the effort came up short in the 99
th minute, The Stars' Benjamin Ibarra found the back of the net for the game-winning goal off a perfectly placed throw-in that bounced in the box.
Concordia-Chicago (4-5-0, 1-2 NACC) will take the pitch on Sunday to cap off Homecoming Weekend with a home match against Edgewood College starting at 1 p.m
