Oct. 4, 2015 - Coming off a strong showing against Dominican University this past Wednesday, the Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team prepared to take another step forward this afternoon when they hosted Edgewood College to conclude Homecoming Weekend. The Cougars and Eagles treated the fans to some extended entertainment, but Edgewood finally spoiled the festivities by scoring late in the second overtime to secure a 3-2 victory.
Fans did not wait long for the action to start as Concordia-Chicago struck first in the ninth minute.
Gibril Jobe (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) controlled the ball on the left side and slid a long pass through the middle to
Joey Malme (Green Bay, WI/NEW Lutheran) angling in from the right side. Malme one-touched the ball past the advancing goalkeeper and inside the left post for his team-leading sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles drew even in the 17th minute. Luke Miller got a little space in front of the net and converted a pass from Jesse Greenwood for the tying goal.a
Concordia-Chicago reclaimed the lead in the 34th minute.
Daniel Krajewski (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) notched his fourth of the year, striking a perfect ball from the left side that sailed over the goalkeeper's reach and under the crossbar to the right corner of the net.
The Cougars had little time to enjoy their second lead. Just two minutes after Krajewski's goal, the Eagles were given a free kick from about 35 yards out. Evan Rogaczewski took the kick and hit a rocket just under the crossbar to bring the visitors back even.
The second 45-minute period saw the shooting become less frequent and the level of physical play increase. The game headed into overtime, and the Cougars just missed on an opportunity that saw Malme try to volley a chipped pass on net.
Edgewood finally won with just 2:46 remaining in the second overtime. Garrett Lee found a little space on the left side, and his shot was deflected by Greenwood. The deflection was enough for the ball to skip past
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) and into the net.
The Cougars finished with 15 shots to the Eagles' 12. Edgewood's Kyle Wood was credited with four saves while CUC's Guzman made two.
Concordia-Chciago will remain at home this week, taking on Wisconsin Lutheran College this Wednesday at 2:00.
