Warriors' Hat Trick Downs Cougar Men

Oct. 7, 2015 -  Sunny blue skies were overhead for this afternoon's men's soccer match, but the Concordia-Chicago Cougars' result would not be as bright today as they fell to the visiting Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors by a final score of 5-1.

The first half started quickly with Roberto Avila (Cicero, IL/Morton East) and Nick Cardenas (Hoffman Estates, IL/H.S.) getting shots on net for the Cougars. Both teams continued to get good looks on net over the course of the first 23 minutes of the match.

Wisconsin Lutheran finally broke through in the 24th minute. Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) made two saves with the second leading to a WLC corner. The corner flew into the box and was headed but saved by Guzman. Unfortunately the Cougars' efforts would not be rewarded when the ball found the foot of Nate Wasser for the first goal of the match.
Wisconsin Lutheran would have a 11-7 edge in shots going into halftime, forcing Guzman to make nine saves
.
The Warriors continued the assault on the Cougar back line in the second half.  The first of the four second half goals was netted in the 49th minute and was similar to the first goal, Guzman kept two WLC shots from going in, but the Cougars would fail to clear it allowing the third chance goal to go in. The Warriors would add a third goal just over a minute later off a perfectly crossed ball into the box.

The Cougars scored their lone goal of the match in the 64th minute.  Joey Malme (Green Bay, WI/NEW Lutheran) put the finishing touches on his team-leading seventh goal of the season, finishing inside the far post after receiving a beautiful pass from Diego Diaz (Cicero, IL/Morton East) in the box.

Unfortunately, that was the only celebration for the Cougars on the afternoon. The Warriors' Nick Zupinski added two more goals in the final 15 minutes, finishing with the hat trick and one assist on the afternoon.

The Cougars will prepare for their next match on Saturday afternoon against Lakeland College. That match is scheduled to take place at 3:30 p.m. following the women's game in Concordia Stadium.
