Sept. 23, 2015 - The Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team returned to .500 this evening as they notched their first road victory of the season, a 1-0 win over Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL.
The lone goal of the match came five minutes into the second half when the Cougars earned a free kick from about 35 yards out.
Roberto Avila (Cicero, IL/Morton East) took the kick and hit a rocket into the box. The ball carmoned off a Beavers' defender and nestled inside the net for an own goal and a 1-0 CUC lead.
While the game stats showed a closely-played match, CUC taking 17 shots to Blackburn's 16, the home team did not have many opportunities to get even. Cougars' head coach
Micah Middendorf was pleased with the organization of the defense. "We did a good job in preventing them from getting too deep into our end. Most of their shots came from long distance, and our keeper
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) was able to handle those without difficulty. We did what we needed to do, and it's good to face a long ride back home with a win in our pocket."
The Cougars (4-4-0) will play another non-conference road match this Sunday when they travel to Franklin College in central Indiana.
