Sept. 13, 2015Â - The Concordia-Chicago Cougars found the offensive rhythm for which they have been searching today in a 5-0 rout of MacMurray College.
On a perfect fall day in River Forest, the Cougars found themselves in great spirits after a dominating performance in all facets of the game. The Cougars attacked early and often, and they would get on the board in the 12
th minute. It was
Natalie Weinhold (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) who found the back of the net in an impressive way. Weinhold took a corner kick for the Cougars; her kick sailed into the box with the perfect curve and found its way into the back of the net inside the far post giving the home team the early 1-0 lead.
The Cougars did not wait long to get back on the attack. In the 17
th minute, another corner by Weinhold connected with the head of
Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South). Sanders' header was off the crossbar, but the ball caromed perfectly to
Stephanie Brown (Streamwood, IL/H.S.) who rammed it home for a 2-0 lead. The Cougars took that score into halftime while outshooting the Highlanders 15-0.
The second half was owned by the Cougars as well. They would rip off another 18 shots in the half.
Alexandra Daigle (Springboro, OH/H.S.) was next to hit the back of the net in the 55
th minute. She was led with a perfect pass from
Christina Behlman (Manchester, MO/Parkway South) and then lofted a shot over the head of the Highlanders' keeper making it 3-0, Cougars.
Two minutes later, the Cougars were back at it again. This time, it would be Daigle who would lead
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.) into space. Johnson's shot found the back of the net just to the left of the keeper for her first goal of the year.
The final goal came from
Gabby Garza (Fenton, MI/H.S.) in the 86
th minute, She lofted a perfect shot from 25 yards out into the net, leading to the final score of Concordia 5, MacMurray 0.
CUC head coach
Chris Brown said of his team's performance, "I thought it's what we have been building on and trying to get to, to put on a complete performance. You look at the stats and play on the field, and it was a very positive result for us."
