May 1, 2015 – The Cougars played their third-round NACC tournament game on Friday in Milwaukee on the campus of Alverno College. Concordia-Chicago played a tough game with Concordia Wisconsin, but ended on the short end of a 3-2 score.
Â
Head Coach
Sarah O'Malley-Fisher said, "Our freshman pitchers
Courtney Pepper (South Bend, IN/Penn) andÂ
Julianne Nation (Oswego, IL/H.S.) were fantastic today in shutting down a potent offense throughout the game. Our senior class of
Jenni Jensen (Chicago, IL/Luther North), Haley Kalinichenko (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon), Hannah Solyom (Lombard, IL/Walther Lutheran) and
Emmy Vowell (Peotone, IL/H.S.) has done a tremendous job of elevating the program and setting the standards for the future"
Â
CUC bats started quickly with an
Allison Kruk (Elgin, IL/St. Edward) bunt single and theft of second base.
Meghan Johnson (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard West) singled Kruk home to stake Nation to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1
st inning.
Â
In the bottom of the second, CUW managed to get the tying run acros, but, in the process, had two players picked off at second base on throws from
Adriana Cura (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield South). It was almost a one-of-a-kind inning as a third pickoff attempt at second base was late by the smallest of margins.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons scored twice with Pepper entering the game in relief to finish the inning. The Falcons looked to add on in the sixth, but the Cura to Jensen connection picked off another base stealer.
Â
Going to the top of the seventh and needing two runs to tie, Cura hit her second homer of the tournament with one out to cut the lead in half. The game finished 3-2 as the Cougars couldn't find the last run needed. The Cougars were knocked out in fourth place, which matches their regular season finish and is the deepest run in a conference tournament for a CUC softball team.
Â
The 19 games won in the season ties the highest win total for a CUC softball team. The graduating class of Jensen, Kalinichenko,Solyom and Vowell ended their careers as the winningest class in CUC history.Â
