Women's Soccer Downed by Eagles

Oct. 3, 2015 -  On a day when fall was definitely in the air and the wind was howling out of the northeast, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars found themselves on the short side of a 2-1 loss to the Edgewood College Eagles.

The game would not take long to get into full swing this afternoon. After a Nikki Anderson (Montgomery, IL/Oswego) shot was saved, Edgewood brought the ball down the field in the 13th minute. A shot from the right side was knocked away by Cougar keeper Ally Krajnak (Griffith, IN/H.S.), but the rebound would fall right to the foot of Alisha Nolden who would then find the back of the net, giving the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.

The Cougars did not let the early goal discourage them in front of a good Homecoming crowd. The crowd would be able to cheer in the 26th minute when the Cougars were able to tie it up. After an Edgewood foul, the ball would be played forward, Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South then showed off her ball-handling abilities inside the box, crossing over from her right to left foot and putting the ball just inside the left post for her third goal of the season.

Coming out of the half, the Cougars would be going with the wind. They created good shooting opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the half that would miss the net. Edgewood would break the tie in the 58th minute with Nolden scoring her second goal of the match, heading in a perfectly crossed ball from Emily Skaer, giving the Eagles the advantage for good.

As they have shown all season, CUC would not go down without a fight. They worked the ball forward into the attacking third for a majority of the last 10 minutes of the match, getting many good looks at the net. The best came in the 82nd minute when Emma Stone (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) launched a shot that was saved.

Cougar head coach Chris Brown said after the game, "As frustrating as it is, we continue to talk about the process and to learn from these experiences. We are doing the right things, but we just need to find a way to execute a little better in the final third."

The Cougars (2-8, 1-3 NACC) will have a few days to work before taking on Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. That match is scheduled under the lights at 7 p.m.
