Oct. 7, 2015 - Â Needing a win in order to make a run for the conference tournament, the Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team made a firm bid this evening with a decisive 4-0 victory at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
The Cougars outshot the Warriors 12-2 in the first half and 17-2 for the game, but the first goal did not come until the 30th minute.Â
Shawna Rembold (Rochester, MI/Stoney Creek)Â timed her run to the net perfectly and finished a pass fromÂ
Sarah LaCost (Mount Prospect, IL/Prospect). Rembold's goal was a just reward as the junior was making her first start of the season. "Shawna has had a good couple weeks of practice, working very hard, and it was great to see her make good of her opportunity," said CUC head coachÂ
Chris Brown.
Less than a minute later, the lead became 2-0.
Nikki Anderson (Montgomery, IL/Oswego)Â made a determined run towards the goal and drew a foul in the boxc. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, andÂ
Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South)Â promptly converted for her fourth goal of the season.
Concordia-Chicago's third goal was a case of "timing is everything" as it came with just six seconds remaining in the first half. A good build-up preceded the goal withÂ
Sydney Fuller (Elkhart, IN/Northridge)Â eventually crossing the ball in front for Sanders to finish into the right corner of the net. "That goal was great teamwork, and the timing of it couldn't have been better," said Brown. "I thought that took some wind out of their sails and put us in firm control."
The Warriors were unable to mount any significant threats in the second half, and Sanders made it a more difficult task for them when she finished off the pure hat trick in the 49th minute. Sanders redirectedÂ
Natalie Weinhold's (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran St. Charles)Â free kick for the 4-0 lead.
Ally Krajnak (Griffith, IN/H.S.)Â earned her first win of the season in goal with some late help byÂ
Maddie Kroll (Geneva, IL/H.S.). "I liked the way that we closed out the game tonight," said Brown. " Their hard work paid off, and I think that we can string together some more wins if we keep working together and trust in what we do."
The Cougars (3-8-0, 2-3-0 NACC) will look for a second straight win on Saturday when they host Lakeland College at 1 p.m.
